Mind Ur Mind: Depression and Getting the Right Therapist For You?


Depression is often misunderstood as just feeling sad, the myths and shame surrounding depression leads to denial and ignorance which can cause confusion and unnecessary pain. Depression is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act.


Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed.  It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function at work and at home.


Getting the right therapist is vital, because feeling comfortable with your therapist and having a genuine good relationship will determine how well and fast you heal.


My first ever therapy session was extremely uncomfortable, I felt judged and couldn’t wait for the session to be over, my therapist was not only cold, but it felt like she was just reading out of a textbook, the energy or connection was missing, she wasn’t asking the right questions or any questions apart from the basics, so after two weeks of therapy, I decided it really wasn’t for me, which became an hindrance to my healing and growth.


However therapy doesn’t have to be daunting, so when looking for a therapist here are some of questions you need to ask yourself: (If you are getting a therapist from the NHS, these choices might not be optional)


What kind of therapist do you want? A man or a woman?Someone from the same country as you? Black, White or Asian?Similar age group as you?What do you aim to get at the end of your session?How do you want your therapist to help you?Are you ready to be honest and vulnerable?


However on the 18th of November, from 6-9pm at the 198 Arts Contemporary Arts and Learning Building, Afrokanist Magazine will be holding an event on Depression and Healing the event aims to highlight the importance of addressing Mental Health and to challenge common misconceptions about depression and anxiety within the Black Community and support them in identifying common triggers and to provide professional answers to all of your  questions regarding depression and anxiety.
